Cool Tips for Hot Days Will Help Tierrasanta Residents "Go Green and Save Green"

With some of the hottest weather of the summer hitting the region, coupled with increased energy usage due to schools back in session and families home from vacation, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is encouraging customers to conserve energy whenever possible.

“Many people are concerned about the strain of hot weather energy usage on their budget as well as our natural resources,” said Michelle M. Mueller, vice president, customer services – mass markets for SDG&E.  “Offering energy-saving programs and services that help customers reduce their energy use is just one way SDG&E is committed to helping the environment, and helping customers save money on their bills.”

Here are some energy-conscious ways you can prepare your home or small business for warm weather:

Ø Adjust your air conditioning thermostat to 78ºF or higher when you’re home and 85ºF when you’re away.  A setting of 78ºF instead of 72ºF can save up to 12 percent off your cooling costs.

Ø During cooler parts of the day and at night, circulate air with a whole-house fan, ceiling fan or portable fan instead of running your central A/C.

Ø Prevent conditioned air from escaping by repairing leaky air ducts, weather-stripping and caulking drafty doors and windows, and keeping doors, windows and fireplace dampers shut while using your air conditioner.

Ø Close blinds, shades or drapes during the hottest part of the day to block the sun’s heat.

Ø Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for air conditioner maintenance, such as replacing dirty filters.  Consider getting your central A/C tuned up to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. Call SDG&E to get information on a program that provides a reduced cost for A/C services.

Ø Use major appliances after 7 p.m. and unplug small appliances when not in use. Consider having that old inefficient working refrigerator or freezer in your garage hauled away and receive a rebate of $35.

Ø If you have an in-ground pool or spa, a pool or spa cover can help save up to 90 percent of your  summer pool heating costs. Also, begin filtering your pool or spa by 7:00 a.m. to avoid peak hours of noon to 6 p.m. when energy is at its most expensive.  You can get a $25 cash incentive from SDG&E for filtering your pool during off-peak hours and reducing filtering time.
