The Airport Issue: Upcoming Sept 18, 2002 Meeting

The Alliance for Airport Progress in the 21st Century (ASAP21) to give a presentation at the September 18th meeting of the Tierrasanta Community Council at 7:45 pm time certain as part of Tierrasanta Community Council's monitoring of the current airport studies. The meeting will begin at 7 pm at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center, 11220 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. It is important that Tierrasanta/Murphy Canyon residents understand the current effort to site a new airport given that MCAS Miramar and the East Miramar sites are under study as a potential site. Please plan on attending the meeting! The following information is from the "Monday Memo" for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce dated August 12, 2002.

"The Alliance for Airport Progress in the 21st Century (ASAP21) announced its formation at an August 1 press conference. ASAP21 is an alliance of organizations, which believe that San Diego must have a new, world class, environmentally sound, international airport to ensure the continued growth of the regional economy in San Diego County.

"ASAP21 represents a broad-based alliance of business, labor, civic and planning organizations from throughout the region which include the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, San Diego World Trade Center, Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, American Electronics Association, BIOCOM/san diego, Downtown Partnership, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C3), South County Economic Development Council, the AFL-CIO Labor Council, and the San Diego Council of Design Professionals.

"The completion of the Lindbergh Field Master Plan showed that, beyond 2020, our present airport will be insufficient to meet the region’s demand for air transportation. A SANDAG/Port Airport Economic Analysis has demonstrated that the region’s economy will suffer if we do not plan for a new airport. Finally, the establishment of the San Diego Airport Authority means that, for the first time, one government entity is focused solely on addressing the airport issue.

"In such an environment, it is critical that supporters and stakeholders of a new airport come together to support the effort of the new Airport Authority and champion the importance of this issue. The establishment of such an alliance is critical before planners begin to focus on a particular site. By organizing early, ASAP21 will be more effective in advocating for airport development once a preferred site is identified. ASAP21 is a political advocacy organization; it is not a planning organization. The group will focus on building political support at the local, state and federal levels, sponsor aviation-oriented forums to better educate the public and the decision makers on aviation related facts and coordinate its member advocacy efforts to make them stronger and more effective."
