818 acres of Tierrasanta Open Space qualifies this urban park as one of the 150 largest in the United States.  Dedicated open space areas and landscaped medians are maintained by the Tierrasanta Maintenance Assessment District, which was established in 1972 and again approved by voters in 1997.

San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman, District 7, is the elected council-member for Tierrasanta.  In August 2011, the city of San Diego's redistricting commission voted to change the boundaries of district 7, and in 2012 D7 had a new council-member representing Tierrasanta and neighboring communities of Navajo, Serra Mesa, Mission Valley and Linda Vista.
